A surprising number of people subscribe to the notion that the Bible is the highest authority for what they believe. But that notion itself is flawed. Because it is they themselves that has exerted dominance by making that decision. It is their ego at work that justifies having done so. Their highest authority is their narcissism, though they will insist that it is otherwise.
In a similar fashion there are practitioners of contemplative prayer who will claim that contemplation has nothing to do with the external self, that it is a purely inward act, and who will work to eschew life around them in hopes of breaking through to something otherworldly. But contemplative practise is always situated, it always has a context with physical constraints. The point is not to deny and transcend these as if God is not create and exist in the world. Indeed, I AM is.
Contemplation is not the awakening of the unknown, it is the recognition of who God most is as God already is.
