The Contest

Whenever a religious movement becomes established, it becomes an institution. Personal experience becomes deferred to social commitment. Any anticipation of immanence becomes reduced to facts and faith, doctrine and beliefs. And any criticism of any of these outcomes becomes an act of treason and proof of infidelity and unbelief, which we are told are the first steps toward apostasy and atheism.
