There is so much more to understanding the solitary, contemplative, and compassionate life than reason. Merton saw it as a dialectic between freedom and discipline, which is true. But surely it is in the very working out of those things in daily life, the actual distancing and embracing going on between the elements of life itself, that highlights the liberation happening, transcending the ordinary demands of daily life in the world, and yet sacramentalizing them at the same time.
