Senseless And Self-Devouring

Solitude that is helpful to a contemplative can be abused in religion. There are people who dedicate themselves to God whose lives are God-less. They have no appreciation for being alone. They may curtsey to the notion but in practise they are smothered by attachments and overrun by activity. In reality these fear solitude and so fear the direct experience of God. They do everything they can to hold solitude and God at bay. And what is worse, they work hard rationally and emotionally to convince others of the same, designing activities that are merely senseless diversions so that people can clap their hands and congratulate one another that they have accomplished great things.
