when people speak

of sacrifice today

they mean

that they have personally decided to do

a good deed

that costs them something

so that it’s

something personal

and something hard

but in the past

sacrifice was

communal

and calculated

so that

by simply doing

everyone was turned into saints

because by looking back on it

anyone could tell

that by simply doing

everyone had stood

in the presence of God
