Taboos are most often associated with sin in pious people's minds. But this popular piety of religious people proves to be only a tabloid scandal sheet, empty gestures of people who either do not grasp either what is holy or who simply want to avoid what is evil. Taking the words of Christ without any seriousness their gesticulations barely even give a nod to good intentions. And yet it is these gestures that are scrupulously carried out with great fidelity and verbal optimism about a God who might be there to notice their self-praise. Practised in corporate settings these religious people have accepted their place in a collective which bears no responsibility for the lack of good news in the Gospel that they preach.
This is the way the church has gone and is why is is so easily and readily mocked, because it deserves to be. It has willed itself to be only a pale stepchild of the world.
However, it is the call of contemplation to both nurture in oneself one's personal ability to respond to God as well as one's personal independence from collective irresponsibility.
This is what is meant by salvation, both for oneself as well as for society.
To those who have ears to hear, let them hear.
