Quies - L. - third declension noun - rest, repose, quiet, calm, lull, peace, and the cessation from labor

-----

For Cassian the goal of life consists of purity of heart, which is only found in the direct, experiential / experimental love of God. This foundation is that upon which the rest of life may be built. Doing so disallows all other perturbations. Inordinate desires and distracting thoughts that take away from this love, which can be found even in the natural course of life. Ego always leads to conceptualizations that people use to justify doing anything other than resting in God; conceptualization is a sure sign that ego is at work. This is found in all of the early Christian traditions - Greek, Coptic, Palestinian, and Syriac - namely, that it is only in solitude and silence that a Christian can become mindful of their own illusory ego-self and so hear and name and learn to surrender to the 'will of God.'
