Is there any doubt that people have more opportunity today to be self-determined than at any time in history? There is insatiable striving for knowledge and power at the cost of everything else at all levels of society and in every society, meaning that our self-determination has made us more alienated and estranged from ourselves than at any time in history. People have made a fetish out of action even in the church, and have turned away from the fullness of personal awareness that comes only from total self-renunciation. The real purpose of contemplation is the deepening of the personal realization of love and the immanence of God. Without this, what have we to give to others?
If genuine, engaged contemplation which ends in people becoming fully integrated in the world and with God is the most needed, then it is the least sought. How can the quest for power allow meekness to share its throne?
