There are only two ways to address this problem of our false self: love or hate. Anything that refuses the pain of stripping off the layers that we impose upon ourselves is hateful...hateful of our true self and hateful of others as we continue to hold them enthralled to their false selves. This hatred recoils at the prospect of the sacrifice and agony required to reset the bones of society; it refuses the bitter pain of self-denial required to reunify with others.
Strong hate is hate that takes joy in hating. Christians with strong hate like to emphasize justice. Ironically, ancient peoples were at one time delivered from this God by one who suffered death because of the pathological cruelty of those whom he loved, out of pity for them. But people relish the return to the old war gods, which feed on collective sovereign populism.
In order to love one needs to be free to face the unworthiness of oneself or one's neighbour.
The truth of Christian love lies not in one's ability to love, but in the knowledge that we are loved.
To receive the Eucharist is never a reward for good behaviour.
