The Christian vocation is to return to our true self, laying aside all of the behaviours that we do and vaues that we hold that make us appear acceptable to other people. Each of the contemplative disciplines allows us to notice what these thngs are. This is in fact an active participation with God in our maturity.

It is impossible to know beforehand both what this will entail and what the result of this will be.

However, God has planted in us these seeds of our identity in Christ. Most of these seeds never germinate because people remain a contradiction to themselves. They are at once something and nothing. They are a life that wants to live on their own terms, all the while aware of their need to die to themselves. The life they live wants to be dead, but their death cannot be quite achieved because they yet will their life outside of Christ to be alive.
