Modernity is a relatively new way of seeing people and how they behave socially.
Modernity entails the setting aside of proscribed, traditional roles.
Modernity means recognizing, naming, and honouring each person’s psychological qualities as the foundational constitution of the human person.
Rather than trying to make people adapt to prescribed social roles and expectations, modern societies understand themselves as being made up of people who are endowed with numerous, recombinant, transcultural mental qualities and skills.
These building blocks of individual identity are common across cultures. However they exist in unique combinations which is what make people unique as individuals around the world.
Modern societies conceive of their identity based upon the social cooperation that encourages this latitude within the human person. Rather than forcing people into prescribed roles that fit contrived social ends, modern society refuses to contribute to the detriment of individuals by doing so.
This is the highest form of what it means to be human and is witnessed to in the Word, but is denied in its application by the lack of love in church, both historically and today. Modern people will not tolerate this, nor should they. The church sees modernity as sin. Modern people are leaving in droves, judging God as a result of the failings primarily imposed on them by medieval clericalism.
