Those who are contemplative eventually come to recognize that their ability to experience this is tied to the grace of God on a direct and deeper level. And while it would be nice if they were accepted on this basis by others, that welcome-ness will never be forthcoming.
There will always be social criticisms that the contemplative's very existence is in some measure self-centred. Yet all criticism of others ultimately derives from these critic's own obstanancy to relegate their right to judge others, which itself is a punitive and anti-social psychological position. Ultimately the question is: What harm does simply being more self-aware than others produce? And considering that statistically speaking a solid 30% of the general population are in some measure biologically more self-reflective than others, then it will always be that the remaining seven out of ten people will remain critical.
In the end you just need to accept yourself, and to get on with life, or you will go mad.
