By and large people who are religious are looking for solutions to problems. The causes for their anxieties are most often taught to them when they are young. If they happen to be psychologically vulnerable to anxiety then religion becomes both a justification for and an outcome of their mental state. These people really do not want an identity. They do not want to mature. Perpetually dependent, nothing in their life can be solved for these. They will remain psychologically docile...spiritually adolescent.
Then there are those who may be immature, but who are capable of maturing. Engaged spirituality in the real world plays its predestined liberating role. It is through deep self-doubt that critical reflection is stirred alongside an openness to life itself, which in reality must include the possibility of the very presence of God. And then. Things blow open. These have the capacity to see beyond themselves and to find a real meaning as genuine people.
There is no hope for the former.
We should do something for the later.
