For enculturated western people the present is always somewhere in the future. Novelty perpetually corrupts that which is right in front of their eyes. And as a contemplative it is easy to become compromised by this. And caught in that position frustration will turn into resentment. You are a slave to others' fantasies and their ill-treatment of you, of others, and of the natural world. And so the most necessary, and yet the most difficult renunciation you will have to make in order experience God directly is to give up resentment. After all, how does everyone else go through life in the modern world without resentment? It is what makes human life human today, enabling people to survive social absurdity all the while holding them servile to it. So the challenge becomes this: How do you renounce resentment without becoming morally anarchical like those who are? Only a few find their way to the solution.
