It would be fatal to believe that you could discover your true self by simply withdrawing. While a certain amount of withdrawal is necessary in order to achieve freedom from the things that distract us from God's presence. But once this freedom has been achieved it is necessary to place it wholeheartedly in the service of God.

In other words, coming to terms with our true selves is a pure work of love. Charity wells up from the awakening of our inner self. It no longer sees others as subjects any more than it sees God as a subject.

Mere withdrawal without losing our desire to control becomes a place of stasis and inertia and is deadly to our spiritual life.
