Neither general nor abstract, but particular and concrete. Not enjoyable, not peaceful, but truthful and unsettling. Never suave or sophisticated, but crude, rude, and brutish. Contemplation appears and God starts busting out the walls and upsetting the furnishings of our interior spiritual house. It is God confronting us. It establishes God's kingdom within by illuminating our inmost intentions.
The activities of the Christian desert tradition sets sights not on speculative truth but the implications of continuing to live with practical evil. Here there was and is no attachment to mental analysis but active, physical engagement in a sort of inner strength training (awakening to the presence of God) through the rigours of physical experimentation (the actual subordination of our ego).
From the point of view of logic this development makes no sense. But as an expression of the very core of life it is indispensable and incomparable...
In this...God takes such delight that God pours in God's whole nature and being...as that of a horse. let loose over a green plain, where the ground is level and smooth, to gallop as a horse will...for this is a horse's pleasure and nature...God is this identity itself.
- Meister Eckhart
