Far from being a withdrawal from the world, both activity in the world and the infused encounter with God are each of them two aspects of the same love. The tension comes in finding work that needs to be of the same character as the later. In other words, the things that you do as a contemplative need to not get in the way of God's presence but serve as a compliment. That activity needs to bear the same fruit that comes from silence, hiddenness, and mystery that is inherent in contemplative prayer itself. The secret is finding labour that abandons itself to the direct presence of God...so in other words, to not be distractive of either God or of the innate integrity of the world, and certainly having nothing to do with the trivialities of men.
