There have always been people who want the benefits without doing the work. When it comes to the direct, infused knowledge of God, this comes to those who both wait, wrapped in the blanket of those who at the beckoning of Christ have likewise fully emptied themselves down through millennia, and who in silence refrain from the futility of articulation. At the same time there are provisional needs to be honestly recognized. And these two feed into one another, and might even feed upon each other. And it is precisely this monastic dialectic that underlies what it means to be a person who is open to communion with God and the world.
