...for people who understand the Church institutionally, or in regard to it's programs, or who participate and support it as a way to maintain a tradition, or teach certain morals, or even to promote a certain civility and good manners, the contemplative life is anathema. So then someone who has no need for these becomes a scandal and is accused of all sorts of anti-social falsehoods, and is deeply resented.
